Salwar Kameez: India is not just a democratic country when it comes to the government and constitution; it is also very much fundamental and varying when it comes to the attires that people wear. While the country is known for its rich heritage and cultures, the Salwar Kameez, or rather known as the salwar suit is something that has been worn and loved since a very long time. Women of various and all different ages have been seen to wear these designer dresses or designer suits all throughout these years since its very origin. There are several types of variants of the salwar suits, and it just keeps evolving and doesn’t stop. Several fashion designers who like working on authentic clothes and styles have started adding their own twists and touches to these designs and thus creating new ones.
Salwar Kameez Origination and history
While many often tend to think that the salwar suits originated primarily in just a specific part of India, it was not. The words Salwar Kameez are two separate words, Salwar and Kameez. The Salwar is often considered as the baggy pants, and the Kameez comprises of the upper part of the attire. The word itself has an origin from the Iranian language which was primarily the native language spoken by the Zoroastrians in several parts of Iran.
The Salwar suits comprising of the designer dresses and even just the ladies suits and bridal dresses that we find nowadays are highly modified versions of what people used to wear back in the old days. The Salwar Kameez was primarily an Iranian outfit which even has a number of exhibits all across the province. There are several things that point to the same, the bronze statue that was found in Shami and even some artifacts in the Tehran Museum claim that the origin of this attire was from that place itself.
Following the invasion made by the Arab during the 7th century was what led to the spread of this fashion and the clothing to different parts of Pakistan as well. Following that, the concept of wearing salwar suits simply spread around like a wild fire. While both men and women used to wear the salwar kameez back in the days, later with the rising influence of the western culture, men started inclining more towards the pants and shirts and not wearing salwar suits anymore.
As stated before, the entire attire consists of two or rather three parts if it’s for women. The Salwar is primarily the baggy trousers that are worn. Most of the Muslim countries along with several parts of Greece and India have been seen to wear the same. While the trousers are not made from Arab attire, it has been reported that the garment belongs primarily from parts of Persia.
The Kameez, on the other hand, is the upper part of the attire, primarily a sort of tunic which can be of different lengths as per the person who’s wearing. It is single piece clothing that’s shaped and made into a tunic as per the choice of design and length of the person. The men’s suit was primarily of solid colors or simply printed or stitched clothing, but the ladies suits can be of different types when it comes to colors, design or even just the work is done on the suit.
While the men don’t carry and “dupatta,” it is a commonly seen counterpart for the ladies suits. Much like the other two parts of the salwar suit, even this part is a single piece of cloth which is stitched from the sides. There is not one specific type to wear the same and is different in different parts of the world. While some drape it on one shoulder, some simply just pleat and pin it to the salwar suit. It is completely upon one’s wish.
Types of Salwar Kameez
With the evolution of the dress and the attire, the number of types has constantly been increasing as well. While many people prefer the traditional looks, most other tends to simply evolve with the situation and have a taste of the latest fashion. It is not just the introduction of new kind of designs or addition of things to the old concepts; there are various other new creations encircling the entire salwar suits and the designer dresses.
Some of the most commonly seen salwar suit types include:
- Patiala Salwar Kameez
Just as the name suggests, the Patiala ladies suits get its origin from Patiala which is located in Punjab, India. While many people tend to think it is something that has been starting to get popular after the evolution of the salwar suits, it has been around for quite a few decades.
This specific style of ladies suit consists of a baggy salwar which is paired with a rather short length kameez. While the traditional design often was accessorized with a long and printed dupatta, the designs have been changing and evolving. Many now tend to accessorize the kameez with a jacket over it to give it a more indie and trendy look.
- Churidar Salwar Kameez
This style of salwar suit is probably one of the oldest types, if not the oldest. This specific type is basically popular for the sleek and tight design that is almost body hugging. People who like to wear fitting clothes prefer this type over the other ones.
The salwar of this type is basically leg hugging and bundles up near the ankles giving the legs a great dimension and very amazing looks. Most of the people tend to keep the kameez long and below the knee because it accentuates the styles and the design and makes the entire outfit look better. This is one specific type of the designer suits that can be worn by either sex, one with the designed kameez and the other under a Sherwani et cetera.
- Punjabi Salwar Kameez
This also finds its origin from the state of Punjab in India. Much like the Patiala Salwar Kameez, this one is almost the same yet holds a significant difference. This is the traditional attire of every Punjabi woman. The designer suits are primarily a three piece suit with a salwar, kameez and a dupatta which is a must.
Most of the Punjabi women tend to use the dupatta to cover their heads. The salwar is flowy around the thighs and narrows down towards the ankles. The kameez is often comparatively shorter and accentuates the entire look of the outfit. Last but not the least; the dupatta is what adds that extra color to the look.
- Designer Salwar Suits
With the constant rising popularity of the salwar suits, the designers have started to incorporate ideas and new implementations in the designer dresses and designer suits. These are often either the Anarkali cut ladies suit, or sometimes even the designer tends to add in different shapes and cuts into them.
This specific category of salwar suits is something that is mostly worn during the popular rituals or festive occasions. They are often made from heavy work clothing material consisting of beads, stones or even sequins. Most of these designer suits along with several of the designer dresses are adorned with a heavy work around the neck which makes it stand out amidst the crowd.
- Wedding Salwar Kameez
Much like the previous category, even this category of ladies suits and designer suits stands out amidst the normal and day to day wear. These suits are often adorned with heavy work with threads and several kinds of ornaments attached to them in the form of beads or even sometimes with real gold or diamond.
It depends on auspicious the occasion is. If the salwar kameez is for the bride, people tend to get the designer suits which comes exclusively made for that person. These suits are the perfect combination of what one calls the perfect amalgamation of western influence on the traditional looks.
